Upcoming Horseback Riding, Running & Cycling Events

Along The Divide Trail … (September 2011)

Horseback Riding, Running & Cycling

By Deb Peter

Overwhelmed by the needs of Sacramento’s homeless, Shawn Holiday founded Cycles 4 Hope.  A single bike provides transportation to get to work, or to a shelter for food, water, clothing, medical and a clean bed.  Once each month on the 4th Saturday, volunteers pack up the trailer with bikes to raffle off during a Sacramento Homeless Outreach.  Twice each month, volunteers meet on “Wrench Nites” to prepare bikes for their monthly event.  You might recall a similar and very successful effort by our own Cool Cycling Club.  Cycles 4 Hope is located at 8741 Auburn Folsom Road in Granite Bay.  Check out their website, www.cycles4hope.org.  During the month of September, FATRAC will be a partner for these events.

The 25th Annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair is scheduled for September 22nd – 25th in Grass Valley at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.  Amazing draft horses gather from across the Western States to perform, compete, and demonstrate their strength.  Their vastly different attributes (from what we commonly see on local trails) remind us of another time, when horses served a more prominent purpose.  Horses were hitched up to a wagon to transport us and our belongings or dragged logs and farm implements.  Aside from the live draft horse exhibits, expect to see a trade show, artwork, horse shoeing competition, a clogging jamboree and a rib cook-off.  Order tickets by phone at 273-6217 or go on-line at www.nevadacountyfair.com.

Don’t miss out on this year’s Coolest Ride & Tie scheduled October 1st at the Olmstead Loop.  Cool Hills Ranch along Hwy 49 will be the host location.  For more information, refer to www.ride&tie.org or contact Frank and Linda (Shaw) Lieberman, race directors, at coolgalinda@sbcglobal.net.  One week later, endurance riders hit the trails for this year’s Tevis 100 Miles in 1 day Ride, rescheduled from July due to heavy snowpack.

Interested in a different view of our local trails?   Take a raft down the Middle Fork of the American River!  This intermediate whitewater challenge is a perfect blend of class III and IV rapids and calm waters.  The beauty is wild and appears undisturbed; the water is crystal clear.  Views of osprey, river otters and large rainbow trout are not uncommon.  A number of local and out of the area rafting companies provide guided trips.  Our trip was supported by All-Outdoors Rafting, based in Coloma.  Lunch was served just below the Tevis Trail at Ford’s Bar.  It’s not too late.  Unless otherwise noted, 1 and 2-day trips are scheduled through September and into October.

Live where you play!
